Who receives donated organs?
Available organs are allocated in accordance with the relevant legal provisions set out in the Transplantation Act and the corresponding ordinances (see Legal basis).
The priority of patients on the waiting list is primarily determined based on the following criteria :
- Medical urgency
- Resident in Switzerland
- Medical benefit
- Priority (children, blood group ...)
- Waiting time
The “Medical benefit” and “Priority” criteria vary depending on the organ in question. Organs are allocated using an Internet-based computer programme known as Swiss Organ Allocation System (SOAS). SOAS contains data on all recipients on the waiting list as well as data on all donors. Based on the data available, the system calculates the priorities of the registered recipients in order to enable allocation of donor organs in accordance with the applicable law.
